Stiletto Knife? Switchblade Knife? Which Is What?

I once came around a thrilling novel; I was quite fascinated by one of the character sliced open the throat of a person pinned to a car wreck. All he used was a switchblade, and man does that require guts or what. But the thing that had me wondering was whether the writers and readers know what knife is a switchblade? Before I got into it, all I was aware of was the fact that the Switchblade knife evolved from a stiletto knife.

Switchblades’ Two Key Features

The 1958 Switchblade Act declares the two most important features of a switchblade knife:

  1. The blade is concealed inside a handle, which is biased to come out of the handle.
  2. The blade of the knife is ejected with the press of a button, switch or another device on the handle.

Therefore, if a knife does not have BOTH these features, then we cannot call it a switchblade. Those are most likely just some assisted opening knives or a normal stiletto knife.
